The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, self-appointed physician assessment organization responsible for certifying physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties. The ABIM is not a membership association, an educational institution, or a licensing body.
Board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine indicates that a physician has completed residency training in a specific medical specialty and passed a rigorous examination assessing their knowledge. Furthermore, this certification encompasses the six general competencies established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) [9]. According to regulations set by the American Board of Medical Specialties, to obtain certification, a physician must:
Physicians obtain board certification after completing residency or subspecialty training and passing rigorous examinations. Unlike a medical license, board certification is not a legal requirement for practicing medicine. However, many hospitals require board certification for admitting privileges, and many health insurance plans require it for contracting or inclusion in specific provider networks.
Maintenance of Certification (MOC)
The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) notes that studies show physicians' knowledge levels decline over time, while their clinical practices and patterns fail to evolve alongside medical advancements. [Citation needed] Every ten years, internists and subspecialists certified in 1990 or later are required to renew their certification through the ABIM's Maintenance of Certification program.
The ABIM's Maintenance of Certification program underwent changes in January 2014. The program now requires physicians to:
Hold a valid medical license
Earn Maintenance of Certification points (points count toward all certificates being maintained)
Engage in Maintenance of Certification activities every two years
Earn 100 Maintenance of Certification points every five years
Pass a Maintenance of Certification exam in their specialty every 10 years
How many people hold certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine?
Since its inception, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has issued more than 425,000 initial certificates in internal medicine and its subspecialties in the United States and its territories. Between 2001 and 2013, the ABIM certified 91,024 general internists. During the same period, it certified over 10,000 cardiologists and more than 6,400 medical oncologists. Currently, more than 140,000 physicians—including over 8,000 who hold lifetime certificates—participate in the ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification program.
